A description of the diocesan archives' collection and acquisition policy.

The first Trinity Church in downtown Pittsburgh was constructed in early years of the 19th Century.

The Diocesan Archives is designated by diocesan Canon XI as the official repository of the records of the Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Pittsburgh, and of the organizations and individuals connected to the Church and its ministry.  It accessions on a regular basis the non-current administrative records of the diocese, including those of its officers, conventions, committees, commissions, staff and organizations.  Records of historical importance to the Church will also be acquired, including personal papers of the bishops, clergy and prominent laity; all records of closed or merged churches, and records exceeding (70) years of age from open parishes and missions; records of separately incorporated or ancillary Episcopal agencies or societies; and other records that have a bearing on the development or impact of the Church in this diocese.

The Diocesan Archives shall also acquire publications, especially directories, works of reference, and works of historical research that relate to the history of the Episcopal Church, the Diocese of Pittsburgh, its clergy, laity, parishes and the early Western Pennsylvania region.  New publications will also be added to support existing special collections on colonial church history, the Book of Common Prayer, and clerical/lay writings.  The purpose of these acquisitions is to supplement the use of the archival collections, and enhance the use of the archives as a resource center on the history of the Episcopal Church in Western Pennsylvania.

Gifts of manuscripts, printed or pictorial documentation, or the deposit of parochial collections are welcome.   Please contact the Diocesan Archivist at the Diocesan offices.
