A Tower Rises Over St. Mark's

Document Actions
After almost fifty years, the sound of a bell will be heard tolling from above St. Mark's, Johnstown.

St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Johnstown has seen much in its 117 years of existence, including the epic Flood of 1889. This disaster cost over 2,000 people their lives, destroyed 1,600 homes and leveled four square miles of the city. All that remained of the original church after the waters receded was its bell.

Thanks to the fund-raising of church members and the leadership of the Rev. Doug Blakelock, rector of St. Mark’s, the sound of this historic bell will once again be heard over Johnstown. A story about this project and the full slide show detailing the construction of the new bell tower can be found on The Johnstown Tribune-Democrat’s website.
